Pandemic Portals consists of my yearning to find solitude during Covid while locked in my house. Solitude is absolutely necessary for an artist yet different from isolation, which was imposed on us by the pandemic. During my daily walks, I found a storm culvert which I transformed into my studio and painted the pop of green, the return of spring that I saw through the circular frame. Inside the storm drain, I was surrounded by gritty graffiti which reminded me of the Caves of Lascaux, the need to leave signs of our existence, echoes of the past and a thread to the future. The circular frame also nods to my time as a young woman living in Japan, meditating in the temple and tea houses while gazing at the manicured gardens.
