In early 2011, Deirdre Murphy participated in a commissioned project for Temple University’s Fox School of Business. Deirdre and other artists were asked to depict landmarks representing the locations around the world where the Fox School has satellite programs or other strong ties. These works are on permanent display on the first floor of the School’s Alter Hall. Deirdre Murphy’s painting Devotion depicts India’s Taj Mahal.
In addition to the original works, the school also produced large-scale, nine feet tall reproductions of the works for the upper walls of the Alter Hall MBA Commons. A selection of Deirdre’s works on paper are also on display.
Artist Statement:
The Taj Mahal is at once opulent and meditative. I choose to the use a portal view from one of the two mosques on either side of the Taj Mahal to frame the composition and to give the viewer a sense of place. I explored the symmetry of the architecture, the decorative floral motifs and the meditative quality found in the linear perspective and reflective pool.
